First edition, in a fine Cosway-style binding by Bayntun Rivière. Crushed green morocco, the covers with gilt-ruled border, the front cover inset with a fine central portrait miniature on ivory of Stevenson (possibly after the portrait by Sir William Blake Richmond) within a maroon morocco onlay strapwork frame outlined and finished in gilt, spine gilt in six compartments with maroon morocco onlays; board edges gilt with dotted line; turn-ins gilt-panelled with French fillet and fleuron-tool cornerpieces, marbled endpapers, gilt edges.

A mixed, but early issue, with points: "dead man's chest" not capitalized on pages 2 and 7; "8" lacking from pagination on page 83; "7" present in pagination on page 127; period dropped from line 20, page 178; "worse" for "worst" in line 3, page 197; 3 leaves of advertisements coded 5R–1083.
