A Cosway binding by Rivière & Son with a whimsical miniature painting on ivory by C. B. Currie. Crushed brown morocco, the covers gilt with a frame of two fillets, a dotted line, and rose-tool cornerpieces with red morocco onlays, the front cover inset with a fine central oval miniature painting of Shakespeare in his study with the muses of Comedy and Tragedy, surrounded by a gilt foliate frame with rose tools finished with red morocco onlays; spine gilt in six compartments with rose tools; board edges gilt with double fillet and lettered on the fore-edges "Cosway Binding" (front) "Invented by J. H. Stonehouse" (rear); turn-ins gilt-panelled with rose-tool cornerpieces with red morocco onlays, signed by the binder at the foot of the front turn-in, green moiré silk linings, front lining gilt-lettered "Miniatures by C. B. Currie," top edge gilt, others uncut. Brown cloth slipcase.
Inserted at the front of the volume is the printed certification "This is No. 804 of the Cosway Bindings invented by J. H. Stonehouse, with Miniatures on Ivory by Miss Currie," signed by both.
