Catalogue Note

A sumptuous Cosway binding  by Rivière and Son, with a finely painted hunting scene by Miss C. B. Currie. Green crushed morocco  richly gilt, the upper cover with scrolled and foliate tooling and symbols of falconry, the central cartouche within a recessed panel with trellis and pointillé design, rear cover paneled gilt with gilt cornerpieces, the spine ornamented and lettered in gilt, the board edges gilt-ruled and signed "Cosway Binding,  turn-ins richly gilt, peach silk moiré linings, the front lining signed "Miniatures by C. B. Currie." Green cloth slipcase.

This is one of the Cosway bindings commissioned by the bookseller Henry Sotheran with a preliminary leaf inserted stating that this fine binding is no. 823 of the "Cosway Bindings invented by J.H. Stonehouse with Minaitures on Ivory by Miss Currie," signed by Stonehouse and Miss Currie.
