An attractive Cosway-style binding featuring hand-painted miniatures of Gabrielle d'Estrées and Madame de Montespan. Full crushed navy blue morocco by Bayntun, art nouveau fan-shaped borders on front and rear covers, spines in six compartments (two reserved for lettering), raised bands, gilt dentelles, navy blue moiré linings, edges gilt.

Gabrielle d'Estrées (1573–1599), Marquise de Monceau, Duchesse de Beaufort,  was mistress to King Henry IV of France. Herself a Catholic, Gabrielle knew that the best way to conclude the religious wars was for Henry himself to become a Catholic. Recognizing the wisdom in her argument, on 25 July 1593 Henry permanently renounced Protestantism.This enabled him to be crowned King of France 27 February 1594. Madame de Montespan (1641–1707) was the  celebrated maîtresse de titre of King Louis XIV by whom she had several children.
