Catalogue Note

One of the highlights of Serebriakoff's storied career was the decorations for Charles de Bestegui's Costume Ball at the Palazzo Labia, Venice in 1951 (and the later drawings of the fantastic party). The Ball was organized by Nathalie Paley and Boris Kochno, once a member of the Ballets Russes and later a director of the Monte Carlo ballet and founder of the Ballets des Champs-Élysées. The present work was one of many Kochno owned by Serebriakoff (which was sold as part of Kochno's impressive art collection including Impressionist and Modern masterpieces at Sotheby's Monaco in 1991). In addition to the Costume Ball, Serebriakoff designed the costumes for Kochno's Paris production of La Sylphide in December 1947.
