Alexandre Popoff (1880 – 1964), an art dealer and collector, was an important fixture within the Russian community in Paris. He was devoted to promoting Russian culture and his discerning taste informed a legendary collection of eighteenth century porcelain, silver and glass and an exquisite collection of nineteenth century Russian watercolor portraits, some of which is seen in this meticulous rendering of his Paris apartment. Painted by Alexandre Nikolaevich Benois in 1930, Popoff's close friend and creative collaborator, it effectively captures his sophistication and stature in Paris society. His taste and charisma helped launch a wave of interest in Russian culture which has since captivated generations of collectors.
