Condition
Paper has been laid down on card, work is cut at angles at top and left corners (to form an arch) and has been pieced together two inches from left edge, small losses and possible repaired tear to wall and mirror at center of composition, surface is light struck. Work is affixed to mat board with two paper hinges along top edge.

Catalogue Note
Charlotte, Comtesse de la Bourdonnaye, was the wife of Arthur Charles Esprit de la Bourdonnaye, who had an important military and political career in the court of Louis XVIII and later Charles X at the time of the July Revolution in 1830. In the present work, the Comtesse enjoys a moment of quiet reading in a well-appointed yet intimate space far apart from government intrigue. The work can be dated to after 1830, the year British artist George Hayter (1792-1871) painted the full-length portrait of the Comtesse with her dog hanging on the salon's wall in the present work.
