Condition
Oil on board affixed with tape on verso to a thin paperstock, 2 inch diagonal tear at top center, with 1 inch area of loss, top right corner repaired, pinhole at center left edge. Under UV: inpainting along left and top edge and lower right edge.

Catalogue Note
Jessica Hayllar, like her sisters Kate and Mary, studied under her father, the artist James Hayllar, RBA (1829-1920). Many of her paintings of the 1880s and through 1900 were of domestic scenes, with each aspect of interior decoration carefully observed and finely painted. The present work depicts a short hallway where traditional English and Continental furniture is mixed with exotic Moorish and Middle Eastern elements fashionable at the time from the hanging brass lanterns to the inlaid table on which a potted palm rests. The interior may be in her father's home, Castle Priory at Wallingford-on-Thames, the location of many of Hayllar's compositions of this period.
