Catalogue Note

The present work depicts the Drawing Room of February 24, 1834, celebrating Queen Adelaide's birthday (which, however, was not until August 13th).  Joining the festivities with the Queen, shown at center in white and purple dress, were the Dowager Duchess of Leeds, Lady Clinton, Miss Bagot, the Earl of Denbigh and the Earl of Erroll.  Near her stood Princess Victoria and her mother, the Dukes of Gloucester and Cumberland and Princess Augusta.  King William IV took his usual station at the side of the Throne Room, near the window, with the Marquis of Winchester and Colonel Taylor.  Also present on this occasion were the Duke of Wellington, the Russian ambassador, and Prince Nicholas Esterhazy, possibly the figure shown in the foreground awaiting to be presented.
