Catalogue Note

In circa 1840, Eduard Hau moved to Saint Petersburg where he specialized in views of Imperial palaces (including the opulent interiors of the Hermitage) and country residences.  The popularity of Hau's compositions commissioned by his many wealthy patrons is suggested by this view of the artist's well-appointed drawing room with its expensive wall-to-wall carpeting, elaborate chandeliers, and plethora of fine furnishings.
