Description

  • marked on bases and with scratch weights

boat form ending in boar's heads, with laurel garlands in their jaws meeting at a central rosette, engraved on one side with crest under earl's coronet.

Condition

some wear, one with base a little uneven, another with some old solder underneath, otherwise good condition, nice modeling and strong design

Catalogue Note

These sauceboats are variants on a design attributed to John Yenn, draughtsman to Sir William Chambers, which was used for a service for Chambers' client George, 4th Duke of Marlborough.  The sauceboats were supplied by Parker & Wakelin and are marked 1768; see Christopher Hartop, The Classical Ideal in English Silver, 1760-1840, London, Koopman Rare Art, 2010, cat. no. 7, fig. 11, p. 13.
