Description
- Paolo Caliari, called Paolo Veronese
- King Ahasuerus Repudiating Queen Vashti and The Triumph of Mordecai: A Pair
- both oval, oil on canvas, unframed
Condition
Both of these canvases have old relinings. In King Ahasuerus Repudiating Queen Vashti there is a small puncture at center bottom. Some small losses around the edges possibly from older frame abrasion. Stretcher bar is showing through which is not uncommon for such a large canvas. Paint layer is stable and a dirty varnish covers it. UV light reveals scattered retouches throughout but to the naked eye the painting presents a strong image, especially for the size.
In the Triumph of Mordecai there are scattered losses to the paint which go down to the canvas, spread evenly but not overwhelmingly around the composition. Again, the paint layer is otherwise stable and scattered retouches are visible with uv. Both of these very large canvases are in generally good condition given their size. They are unframed.

Catalogue Note
These paintings reproduce two of the three scenes from the Book of Esther that Veronese painted for the ceiling of the Church of San Sebastiano in Venice. The other scene, in rectangular format, depicts the Coronation of Esther by Ahasuerus. In addition to the Esther cycle, Veronese completed many paintings for the Church including a cycle dedicated to the church's patron saint, Sebastian, and decorations for the choir, sacristy, organ and the altarpiece for the high altar, The Madonna in Glory with St. Sebastian and other Saints. This prominent commission was given to Veronese by Brother Bernardo Torlioni in 1555 and work was completed by Veronese in 1570.
