Description

  • An Attic Red-figured Column Krater, attributed to the Painter of Syracuse 23510
  • Terracotta
  • height 16 3/4 in. 42.5 cm
with stepped foot in two degrees, a frieze of confronted lions and boars on the edge of the rim, and linked lotus buds on one side of the neck, painted on one side with two hoplitodromoi before or after the race, each holding his helmet and shield emblazoned with a running hoplitodromos, his trainer standing behind him, and on the other side with a bearded man walking to right and holding a skyphos, confronted youths flanking him.

Repaired from many fragments, in some places rather poorly, with restorations along the break lines, other areas of restoration (note for example the restoration in the middle of the side shown in catalogue, affecting the helmet), chips and scratches.

For the three other known vases by this artist see J.D. Beazley, Attic Red-figured Vase-Painters, 2nd. ed., Oxford, 1963, p. 510 (kraters in Syracuse, Madrid, and the Walters Art Museum). He is related to the Aeghistus Painter. The black-figure animals are duplicated on the name vase of the Florence Painter, and kraters by the Alkimachos and Villa Giulia Painters.
