Catalogue Note
The design of these armchairs was probably created by Sir Herbert Baker (1862-1946) for Sir Philip Sassoon (1888-1939) for his house in Kent, Port Lympne that was rebuilt by Baker at around 1910. At the time of the house's refurbishment two sets of armchairs with wing-form armrests were delivered; the present six chairs for the dining room and another six with slightly different feet and front for the library. A single chair from the library set was previously with Didier Aaron, Inc., New York, and sold Christie's New York, January 15, 2003, lot 483.
