Catalogue Note

Elliot made a speciality of these boxes in 17th century style, after models such as the caskets in the Calverley toilet service in the Victoria and Albert Museum.  Other boxes with inset plaques and side panels of similar decoration have appeared at Christie's, London, 26 November 1975, lot 170 and 171, Sotheby's, London, 14 February 1988, lot 46, Christie's, London, 25 November 1987, lot 156.
