Catalogue Note
Lebelle was an artist active in Paris in the early 19th century specializing in topographical views of the city, working in the genre éludorique or fixé sous verre technique. His manner of signing has sometimes led to him being identified as 'Sebelle'. For a view of the Tuileries Gardens by Lebelle, formerly in the collection of D. David-Weill (no.428), see Sotheby's, London, 9 June 1986, lot 69. In the Sir John Soane Museum, London, there is a group of his works including straightforward topographical views and more fanciful parkscapes. Two of the latter, of larger scale than normal, are signed and respectively dated 1820 and 1825.
