later gilt metal handle with lion mask, the lid surmounted by a carved ivory figure of Zeus, the body carved in the round with an allegory of summer with a bacchante sitting on a chariot filled with wheat chafes drawn by a pair of bulls, attended by female and male companions harversting fruits and wheat.
Condition
Overall in good condition. Some tarnishing and minor wear to gilt metal handle and silver-gilt mounts, consistent with age and use. The gilt metal handle appears to be a later addition: its size, shape and placement on the carved ivory body do not allow the lid to close so that it is flush with the lip. There are also two small holes in the carved ivory near where the handle attaches to the tankard body, which suggests an earlier handle of a different proportion. The rim of the lid has a dent approximately one inch long and is slightly warped.
