Description

  • Portrait of Frederick William, Fürst (Prince) of Hohenzollern-Hechingen (1663-1735)
  • charged with the sitter's coat of arms

  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas is unlined. The paint surface is secure, if a little dirty and thin in parts. The red cloak has in particular retained its colour although this is clouded by the old varnish which covers the painting. A canvas join is visible on the paint surface. It runs vertically for the full length of the canvas approximately 3cm in from the frame. Some old retouchings and minor areas of paint loss are also visible along this join. A number of scattered spot retouchings in the sky have also discoloured. These retouchings are confirmed by inspection under UV light, and although this is somewhat impeded by the varnish, two patches of retouching to the sitter's breastplate and one to his right hip, as well as seemingly extensive infilling of the craquelure across the painting are also revealed. It furthermore seems to suggest some older, extensive retouchings in the sky but this is difficult to assess due to the fluorescence of the covering varnish. The face of the sitter and the coat of arms seem to be unaltered. Offered in a gilt wood slip frame in fair condition. This mounts the front of the painting but not the sides of the canvas.
