  • signed and dated Canella 1831 lower right
  • oil on canvas
  • 46.5 by 39cm., 18½ by 15½in.

Condition

The canvas has been re-lined. There is scattered fine craquelure to the surface, notably in the sky and two diagonal lines running from the Invalides dome through the sitter's left leg. There are scattered specs and small areas of discoloured retouching visible in the sky, particularly on the right above the horizon. These are visible under ultraviolet light, as is some other old retouching along the top and left edges, and some possible retouching in the sitter's coat. His face is untouched, however. Framed in a coved gilt wood frame with a broad, flat wooden liner.
