Catalogue Note

The antique Medusa Rondanini is so called because it was housed in the Palazzo Rondanini in the eighteenth century. It was spotted there in 1786 by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who wrote about it that 'the mere knowledge that such a work could be created and still exists in the world makes me twice the person I was.' Encouraged by this praise, King Ludwig of Bavaria purchased the Medusa for his collection. It is preserved in the Munich Glyptothek.
