After Tiziano Vecellio, called Titian

Estimate
3,000 - 5,000 GBP
bidding is closed

Description

  • Tiziano Vecellio, called Titian
  • The Presentation of the Virgin
  • oil on canvas

  • 50x105cm.

Condition

The canvas is unlined. The paint surface is dirty and under an old, yellowed and uneven varnish. The work retains some impasto, most notably in the clothing of the figures depicted. There are no damages or areas of paint loss apparent, though the vertical weave of the canvas has become raised on the surface of the work in a few areas. Strengthenings to the figure in red to the right of the painting, and two of the figures in the left hand group are visible to the naked eye. Inspection under UV light, which is impeded by the varnish, confirms these strengthenings but reveals just a handful of scattered spot retouchings to the remainder of the work. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in fair condition, with a few minor losses.
