signed, titled, and dated in ink in the margin, the photographer's copyright stamp, credit and date in ink, and his 'Robert Frank Archive' stamp, with annotations in pencil, on the reverse, framed, 1955, printed later (The Americans, p. 49; Looking In, pp. 234 and 466 and Contact #20)

Condition

This print, on double-weight Agfa paper with a slight surface sheen, is in generally very good condition. In raking light, faint silvering is visible in the dark areas of the image, primarily at its periphery. This print has recently undergone conservation; a treatment report is available upon request. The signature, title, and date in blue ink in the margin have been blurred by this treatment and have faded to a green-yellow hue. The stamps and penciled notations on the reverse were not affected and remain bold and strong. On the reverse of the print are the following annotations in an unidentified hand in pencil: 'RFr.0242.ZR'; 'RFr.0144.Y' (crossed out); and 'R.F. 4256. C.' There are also in pencil the numbers '676' and '20,' as well as the alternate title, 'Rooming House, Los Angeles.' Although this print is dated 1955 in the margin, Sarah Greenough dates this image 1956 in 'Looking In: Robert Frank's 'The Americans'.' On the reverse of the frame, there is a Michael Hoppen Gallery, London, label, with credit and 'The Americans' in ink.
