mounted, signed in pencil on the mount, a Carmel studio stamp, title and date in ink, on the reverse, framed, 1944, printed in 1981 (400 Photographs, back cover and pp. 261 and 422)

Provenance

Gift of the photographer to the present owner, 1983

Condition

This print is in generally excellent condition. The tips of the upper and lower right corners of the print are lifting ever-so-slightly. Visible in raking light are a few tiny deposits of original retouching, primarily in the upper portion of the image. The upper edge of the mount is hinged with linen tape to a modern mat. Although Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career, the Carmel studio stamp on the reverse of the present mount is not reproduced. The stamp, similar to BMFA 11, but with the zip code '93923,' is dated with both the negative and printing dates (in this case, 1981) in an unidentified hand in ink.
