Caldecott Medal winners Elmer Stanley Hader and Berta Hoerner were a husband and wife team that illustrated a prodigious number of books for children. A particular admirer of Elmo's work was John Steinbeck who requested the artist to design the dust-jacket for The Grapes of Wrath.
