Cet éventail a probablement été éxécuté pour célébrer le centenaire de la naissance de Hérold en même temps que la 1482ème représentation de Le Pré aux Clercs précédée du premier acte de Zampa. Ferdinand Hérold (1791-1833) naquit à Paris dans une famille de musiciens et compositeurs. Virtuose aux piano et violon, il composa ses premières pièces dès l'âge de 7 ans. Il partit ensuite pour l'Italie, Rome puis Naples où il enseigna la musique aux filles du roi de Naples, Joachim Murat. Il revint en France en 1816 mais dut attendre la représentation de Marie en 1826 pour connaître le succès. C'est Zampa, joué en 1831, qui l'a véritablement propulsé sur le devant de la scène, en France comme en Allemagne, suivi l'année d'après par Le Pré aux Clercs. Le 10 rue Herold (Paris, 1er arrondissement) était le lieu de naissance de Hérold, dont la rue fut rebaptisée en son honneur en 1881.

This fan was probably made for the centenary of the composer Herold's birth, celebrated with the 1482th performance of Le Pré aux Clercs preceded by the first act of Zampa. Ferdinand Herold (1791-1833) was born in Paris into a family of musicians and composers. A virtuoso on piano and violin, he had already composed some works for the piano by the age of seven. He then travelled to Italy, first to Rome and then to Naples where he taught music to the daughters of Joachim Murat, then King of Naples. He returned to France in 1816 but had to wait for Marie in 1826 to enjoy success. Zampa premiered in 1831 and was highly acclaimed in France and Germany, followed the year after by Le Pré aux Clercs. 10 rue Herold in Paris (1st arrondissement) was Herold's birthplace and the street was renamed in his honour in 1881.
