Catalogue Note

The panels are after original work by John Henning who reproduced the friezes from the Parthenon. There were two sculptors by the name of John Henning, father and son: – the elder (1771-1851) and the younger (1801-1857). They both produced friezes of classical figures. John Henning the elder was responsible for the frieze on the Athenaeum, Pall Mall, while his son was responsible for that on the archway next to Apsley House, Hyde Park Corner.
The inscription "HENNING.F.PUB 1817" means 'Henning fec Published as the Act Directs 1817'. 'Published as the Act Directs' refers to early copyright legislation, which covered engravings and sculpture.
