Catalogue Note
The leaf subject combines several episodes from the Odyssey. In the middle, the Gods, encouraged by Minerva, decree that the nymph Calypso must release Odysseus so that he may return to Ithaca (I: 1-94). On the right, the despairing Calypso telling Odysseus of the gods' decision (V:151). The landscape on the left is probably intended as Ithaca. Another fan, showing almost the same composition in reverse, attibuted to the Netherlands is at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, inv. A211.
