la base en bois ébonisé ornée de volutes ajourées et chérubins en émaux chatoyants, sous un Christ dans une niche magnifiquement décorée  et entourée de soldats romains, le tout surmonté de la Justice





the stepped ebonised wood base applied with openwork volutes and cherubs enamelled in bright colours below the resurrection of Christ in a brilliantly-decorated niche flanked by astonished balletic Roman soldiers, the whole surmounted by the figure of Justice


Condition

Very good condition and extremely delicate and accomplished work; Even the miniature scales in the hand of Justice are functional.

Catalogue Note

The design of this piece is taken from the top section of the magnificent and much-copied Augsburg house altar, made in 1573/4 by Abraham I Lotter and David Altenstetter for Albrecht V, Duke of Bavaria (1528-1579).  It has been suggested that the present work comes from the workshops of Reinhold Vasters in Aachen as certain elements closely resemble those on the jezelled and enamelled model of Solomon's Temple designed by Vasters (Christie's London, 12 December 2000, lot 73.
