Description
- François Boucher
- Two allegories: a young lady with flowers and a young lady with white doves
- a pair, both oil on canvas, shaped top and bottom
Provenance
St. Jacobs Godshuis Foundation, Huis Leeuw en Hooft, Heemstede, until 1966;
Bought by the father of the present owner in 1966.
Condition
The actual paintings are warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration. Both canvasses have an effective relining (wax) and are slightly undulant in the top. The paint layer is in an excellent condition, with the impasto's nicely preserved, e.g. in the flowers and the dress. There are some very tiny paint losses in the lower side and the background of the paintings. A small surface scratch is visible in the flowers of the first painting. Some tiny, discoloured retouchings are visible in the sky of the latter. The paint layer is under a dirty layer of varnish with a craquelure pattern which varies in places. Inspection under UV light reveals an unevenly dirty varnish layer and a couple of retouchings due to frame abrasion. Offered in a shaped frame as illustrated, in fair condition.(MvE/ML)
