Description

  • bears signature lower right: A. cuyp...
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is somewhat less red and brighter in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel seems to consist of 2 planks and is cradled to the reverse. There's a thin restored horizontal split in the lower left corner of approx. 15 cm., and two smaller ones in the upper left and lower right corners. Otherwise, the panel is in good condition. The paint layer is secure, if a little abraded in some of the houses and figures. The impasto in the sky and trees is nicely preserved. Some minimal retouches can be observed in the sky, following the woodgrain. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals a larger area of retouching along the join and along the splits, and some additional small scattered ones in the sky and in some in the ships and figures. The varnish is unevenly cleaned. Offered in a plain wood frame with faux tortoise shell inlay in good condition.
