Description

  • Egbert van Heemskerck the Younger

  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Phillips, 2 December 1997, lot 229.

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative for the actual painting. The canvas has a somewhat firm relining. The paint surface is slightly beginning to lift to the lower right, but otherwise, is generally sound, if fairly abraded in the background figures and lower left foreground. Small, somewhat crude, scattered discoloured retouches can be made out, e.g. in the background figures, in the lower foreground, in the wall in the upper background, as well as some strengthenings in the foreground figures. Inspection under UV light is impeded by a dirty varnish layer, and only reveals a few recent retouchings in the upper background. Offered in a plain light wood frame in fair condition.
