Description

  • Jan van Bijlert
  • A shepherd wearing a baret, holding a staff and a plum branch
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The actual painting is a little softer and less yellow in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a double relining (glue). Gusping is visible to the front. The paint surface seems to be well preserved. A restored tear of approx. 15 cm. is visible in the background in the upper right and there are some creases in the lower right corner which have caused some wear. No other major damages are apparent. There are some small scattered paint losses along the edges. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty varnish. Some strengthening is visible in the eyes of the figure. Inspection under UV light is largely impeded by the thick varnish layer, but does reveal the retouchings as mentioned above, as well as some retouchings in his neck, shoulder, clothing and arms. Offered in a brown wood frame in good condition. (MvE/ML)
