Provenance

Anonymous sale, Stockholm, Auktionsverk, 8 December 2010, lot 2819.

Condition

The actual painting is warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is laid down on board. The paint layer seems to be well preserved, but is a little thin in the background. There is a minor vertical crease of approx. 10 cm. visible, running from the upper edge. There are some tiny scattered discoloured retouchings, e.g. in the background, in the closed book and in the red drapery in the lower left corner. The paint layer is under a dirty varnish, which under UV light appears to be unevenly cleaned. Further inspection under UV light reveals the afore mentioned scattered retouchings. Offered in a brown wooden frame in good condition with some tiny chips.(MvE/ML)
