  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Lille, Ponthiere, 1873;
Arnoud Hessel, May 1933 (both the above according to a label on the reverse, as by Rachel Ruysch).

Condition

The actual painting is more bright and less yellow in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas as an old relining (glue). No major damages are apparent. The paint layer seems to be well preserved, but grown a little thin in the lower leaves and in the central white flower. Some retouchings are visible in the background, surrounding the flowers, and there is a retouching in the red flower most left. The paint layer is under a slightly dirty and somewhat uneven varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals some strengthening e.g. in the rose in the upper left, a leaf in the lower left and a leaf in the lower right. Offered in a brown wooden frame with a gilt fillet, some chips. (MvE)
