Description
- Quiringh Gerritsz. van Brekelenkam
- A modest interior with an elderly couple seated at a table, eating mussels and bread
- signed with initials lower centre on the barrel: Q.vB(in ligature)
- oil on panel
Condition
The actual painting is a little softer in tone and a little less yellow than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is bevelled on all but the lower edges. The panel is flat and stable. No major damages are apparent. The paint layer is secure, though quite abraded, especially in the darker areas. Strengthening is visible in the figures with the naked eye. The paint surface is under a dirty and dull varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals small scattered retouchings in the figures, in the still life in the right, in the lower foreground and there are probably older retouchings underneath the varnish in the background. Offered in a new, light wood frame in good condition.
