Description
- Portrait of a gentleman in a fashionable interior
- oil on panel
Condition
The actual painting is less green and warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The single panel is generally sound and bevelled to the reverse. There's a diagonal repaired damage of the panel in the lower left corner. The paint layer is secure and under a dirty varnish. Inspection under UV light for the most part is impeded by the dirty varnish, but does reveal a few very minimal strengthenings in the figure''s hair and face.
Offered in a black plain wood frame in fair condition.

Catalogue Note
The gilt leather wall hanging which decorates this interior can be identified as Dutch and dates around 1635-55. Through its highlights the characteristic relief pattern can clearly be seen. Embossed gilt leather was a Dutch invention from 1628. We are grateful to Dr. E.F. Koldeweij, Gilt leather specialist, for his help in cataloguing this lot.
