Description

  • Gerard Ter Borch
  • Saint John the Evangelist writing at a table, together with an eagle
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is slightly less red and shows more detail than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is stable and has a faint convex bow. No damages are apparent. The paint surface is secure. Some tiny retouched losses are visible along the edge centre right and some tiny scattered retouchings can be made out in the desk, in the figure's coat and two tiny ones in the face. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty varnish. Inspection under UV light is largely impeded by the dirty varnish, but does reveal some additional strengthening in the books. Offered in a plain lacquered wood frame with a gilt fillet in good condition.
