Condition
Overall the condition of the marble is good. There is some minor wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is faint veining visible on the surface and a few minor inclusions consistent with material.
The relief has been set in the frame using metal rods. An area to the right of the relief on the reverse was filled with plaster. There are a few chips to the corners of the frame.

Catalogue Note
The present relief compares closely to one of the prime versions of Delvaux' famous Mater Dolorosa (Royal Museums in Brussels, inv. no. 8962). All other examples illustrated by Jacobs (op. cit.) lack the refined striped pattern on the collar.
