Description

  • Fragmentary Corpus Christi
  • polychromed wood
  • Italian or German, 17th/ 18th century

Condition

The corpus has lost its arms, two toes on the proper left foot and a large section on the proper right side of the head. The latter loss is seemingly due to worming. There are naturally occurring stable splits visible on the surface. The probably later, and locally retouched, paint has losses due to the working of the splits, craquelure and rubbing throughout. There is a large knot on the proper right shin. To the reverse there is a patched hole between the shoulderblades, an iron bar for mounting over a slot in the perezonium and two nails at the back of the neck.

Catalogue Note

The general proportions, positioning of the head and details such as the forked beard suggest that the carver of this weathered Crucifix was familiar with Giambologna's corpora.
