  • oil on canvas, unframed

Provenance

Joseph, Count von Plettenberg-Lenhausen, Haus Hovestadt, Westfalen, Germany;
And thence by descent to his son, Franziskus, Count von Plettenberg-Lenhausen, Haus Hovestadt;
And thence by descent in the family to the present owner, by whom brought to the United States in 1987.

Condition

This canvas is loose on its stretcher and appears to be unlined except for thin strips that have been applied around the stretcher edges. Small patches have been applied to the reverse to address a number of the old tears that are visible on the front: in the sky in the background to the left; to the right of the prince's shoulder and in his forehead. There is an (approximately) 2 inch tear in the body of the sleeping dog to the left and a small puncture in the upper center in the foliage of the tree that remain unrepaired. In spite of this, the paint layer appears quite stable and under UV there are only a few small scattered retouches and infills of the craquelure throughout. Larger areas of retouch are visible along the repaired tears, and there are also a few spots in the boy's face and cloak. This work should respond well to cleaning and restoration.
