Attributed to Jan Brueghel the Elder, Attributed to, Hendrick van Balen

The present work is a hitherto unrecorded version of a composition listed in K. Ertz and C. Nitze-Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere (1568-1625).  Kritischer Katalog der Gemälde, Vol. II:  Landschaften mit christlichen Themen; Mythologie, Lingen 2008-10, pp. 780-781, cat. no. 388. That work, described as belonging to a German Private collection, is of slightly larger dimensions than the present example, and is also a collaboration between Brueghel and van Balen. Furthermore, that documented version has been dated by Ertz to the beginning of the seventeenth century.
