The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting is clearly damaged. The gilding in the background may be period even though there are un-restored losses on the left and right. The restoration here has not attempted to recreate either the figures or the robe of the Madonna. They have a neutral soft brown color which is clearly visible but which does not interrupt much of the form and impact of the picture. The two big losses in the Child, one in His head and one in His waist, are quite noticeable and distracting, and some adjustment here may benefit the picture.
