Condition

Relining is firm and stable. painting is clean and presentable as is. there is very good retention of the paint surface with lovely detail and coloration throughout. examination under ultraviolet reveals scattered retouches here and there, mostly in background areas but some smaller cosmetic ones also scattered on fruit and birds. there is a possible old repaired vertical tear in background and part of squash at lower and middle right side. retouches have been well applied and there is no need for further work. In a carved and gilt wood frame with some minor losses.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague for identifying this painting to be a work by van de Kerckhoven.

Though born in the North, Kerckhoven worked mostly in Italy and is first mentioned in Venice in 1663.  He also worked for many years in Vicenza.  In Italy, he became known as Giacomo Semiterio or Giacomo da Castello.
