Condition

Relined and under a dirty old varnish. an overall craquelure pattern is visible. the paint surface is generally very well preserved and there is good detail in figure. examination under ultraviolet reveals some very small retouches to flesh areas; a small retouch on lace collar to left of her neck and another small retouch on shaded area of left nostril. some reinforcement to outline of left cheek. a few minor retouches here and there to costume and background. this painting would benefit from a light cleaning and fresh varnish. In an elaborately carved and gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

The sitter, born Delicia Fryer, was the daughter of Sir John Fryer, Bart.  She was married in 1742 to Joshua Iremonger of Wherwell Priory, Hampshire.  This portrait, painted in the same year, was probably a marriage portrait, though no pendant by Highmore of her husband is known.  She died in 1744 soon after the birth of their son, Joshua.
