Description
- Venezia, Veduta di Piazzetta San Marco dal Canal Grande con bucintoro e stemma araldico della famiglia Grimani
- olio su tela
Condition
The painting is cooler in tone and less yellow in colour than the catalogue illustration suggests. The modern relining has somewhat flattened the paint surface which is a little dirty and under a discoloured varnish. Several areas of discoloured retouching can be made out in the sky. The architecture appears better preserved to the naked eye other than some abrasion in the gate in the central background and to side of the building behind the bridge at right. The water and figures are slightly worn. Inspection under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouchings in the sky which are more concentrated to the right of the composition, and reveals other retouchings in the shadows under the arches of the Doge's palace. The painting would benefit from a light clean. Offered in a later wooden frame with some losses.
