This signed painting is slightly less saturated in colour than the catalogue illustration suggests. The relining, probably from the second half of the 20th century, has not flattened the paint surface which under a discoloured varnish appears a little dirty but in good condition. The impasto is still fresh and well preserved, particularly in the details of the still life elements and the thick brushtrokes in the background trees and landscape, and in the flowers. The paint has become slightly sunken in the darker tones in the glass vases but is otherwise in good condition. Inspection under UV light confirms the good condition with only very minor retouchings flourescing, for example in the centre of the orange flower. Offered in a later replica carved and gilt wooden frame in good condition.

In questa elegante tela di gusto settecentesco Nicola Maria Recco reinterpreta, in chiave più morbida e disimpegnata, le accattivanti "Nature in posa" del padre Giuseppe Recco, il più celebrato pittore di Natura Morta nella Napoli di pieno Seicento, tanto da forgiarsi del titolo di Cavaliere. È dal suo repertorio che provengono, infatti, il goloso vassoio di dolci di varia forma e sapore e l'elegante vaso di fiori di cui si esaltano le trasparenze del vetro, il tutto ambientato, però, su di un tavolo marmoreo posto -anzichè in un buio salone di palazzo barocco, difeso agli sguardi da pesanti tende damascate- all'aperto, in un limpido giardino che si estende a perdita d'occhio, dove la colazione è consumata al fresco di una leggera brezza estiva, che pare di udir frusciare tra le fronde dei cipressi mentre gli usignoli cinguettano qua e là. È tutt'altra atmosfera, dunque, quella rievocata da Nicola Maria in questa felice operetta e la leggiadria dell'immagine è sottolineata dalla firma posta con ironia sull'effimera scatola di biscotti, piuttosto che scolpita nell'eternità della mensa marmorea, come solennemente usava fare Recco padre.
