Description
- Jan Josef Horemans the elder
- An elegant Turkish gentleman at a balustrade; An elegant figure playing a guitar at a balustrade with a macaw
a pair, both oil on canvas, unframed
Condition
Both canvases are unlined.
Their paint surfaces are a little dirty, but secure and in good condition, with the detail well-preserved. There is some abrasion apparent in the brown tones of the painting, particularly those used in the buildings.
There is an old restored damage approximately 8 by 2cm. in the trees in the painting of the man, which is discernible due to discoloured retouchings. There are some further retouchings visible to the naked eye in both paintings, such as in the man's fur hat, the hind legs of the monkey, and the base of the Neptune statue in the former and in the tapestry of the latter painting and to the peripheries of both paintings.
Inspection under UV light is impeded by the reflective varnish over both paintings, but does confirm these retouchings and further reveals extensive scattered spot retouchings to the sky and fairly extensive retouchings and strengthenings to the buildings.
The man's jacket, the tapestry and statue to his left in the former painting, and the statue of Cupid, the parrot and the lady in the latter painting seem to remain largely untouched.
Offered unframed.
