Description

  • Norbert van Bloemen
  • Interior with a man and a woman smoking
  • signed with initials centre left: N.V.B.
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is somewhat flat, though secure and in good condition, under a glossy and uneven varnish. Retouchings along all of the margins are visible to the naked eye due to their discolouration, and run approx. 4cm in around all sides. Inspection under UV light is slightly impeded by the reflective varnish but confirms these retouchings and further reveals some retouchings to the man's left hand, his fur hat, the lady's left hand sleeve, and scattered elsewhere. Some patches where the craquelure has been filled in also fluoresce, such as across the woman's bodice. Their faces appear untouched apart from some infilling. Offered in a modern black wood and parcel gilt frame in good condition with a few minor knocks.
