Description
- Mary Magdalene
- oil on canvas, laid on board, a fragment
Condition
The canvas has been laid on board and is uneven.
A possible canvas join is visible parallel to and 3cm. in from the upper margin. There is a small old, restored split in the canvas upper left between this join and the painting's edge.
The paint surface is in good condition, though dirty, with a fine craquelure running throughout. There are a few specks of paint loss lower right and some short stretches of frame abrasion to the right hand margin. There are some scattered small dents/scuffs in her hair lower right.
Inspection under UV light is impeded by the reflective varnish but does confirm the aforementioned retouchings and further reveals infilling to the craqulure upper left and lower right, scattered spot retouchings to the Magdalene's face and neck and larger retouchings to the periphery of the painting, most notably to possible old damages to the centre of the upper and lower margins.
Offered in a carved gilt wood frame in good condition.
