Condition
The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is secure and in good condition if a little worn in the darker background areas and the darker blues of the Madonna's robes. Inspection under UV light reveals two unobtrusive old restored damages upper left and to the left of the fruit bowl, the largest of which is approx. 5 cm squared as well as some other scattered retouching work.
Offered in a carved gilt wood frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note
The composition relates to another autograph work in the Quadreria del Pio Monte della Misericordia, Naples (see P. Leone de Castris, Pittura del Cinquecento a Napoli, Naples 1991, p. 279, reproduced). The present design differs from the Naples work in the way Saint Joseph gazes at the viewer directly and is more complex in its inclusion of the still life elements in the centre of the composition.
